Mel Grubb Photo Collection – consists of nearly 700 mostly 8”x 10” black & white photos of SE West Virginia and SW Virginia from 1883 to 1987. Five books are labeled “Old Coal Mining” and two are labeled “Trains.” However, there are many photos throughout the collection that don’t fit in either category. For example, there are multiple aerial photographs of Bluefield, WV, and Pocahontas, VA. Most of the photos in the collection were taken by Grubb but there are some he obtained from other sources. There are also some examples where the same building or train was photographed from different angles and a few examples of duplicate photos. Grubb (1925-2018) was a prolific and highly regarded professional photographer who captured images below ground in coal mines, on the ground, and above ground while flying his own plane.
